In this article by the New York Times, it discusses how Mark Zuckerberg plans to basically make WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook Messenger more compatible with each other. Mark Zuckerberg, who is the CEO of Facebook has ordered all of the apps to incorporate end-to-end encryption. His plan is to create all of Facebook’s messaging platform into one huge interconnected communicationplatform.
Currently, you are not able to send messages from Facebook to someone who only has the WhatsApp platform. With this change users on Facebook Messenger, Instagram, and WhatsApp would all be able to communicate, regardless of the app that they are using. However, all three of the services still are going to operate as stand-alone apps.
According to the article, the people involved in the project say that it is going to require thousands of Facebook employees working together in order to complete this move. They are going to have to reconfigure how WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook Messenger function at their most basic levels. Furthermore, Facebook is still in the early stages of the work and plans to complete it by the end of the year or in early 2020.
I believe that this is a really great move by Facebook because it will allow for more people to be able to connect to each other. Also, when this project is completed it will increase the companies profits because of the increased user engagement. The major takeaway that I have from this article is that company’s need to be willing to change over time. It is extremely important for a company to change and adapt over time in order to remain relevant and be as profitable as possible.

Austin, I think that this is a really cool thing and I am surprised it hasn’t already been done. I have never used WhatsApp before and honestly have no idea what it is, but I do use both Facebook and Instagram and would love to see a combined messaging world. This makes me wonder if users would need to download a separate messaging app to have access to this like there is one for Facebook. You make a good point at the end of your post regarding not only will it be great for users being able to connect, the increased user engagement will increase profits. Sometimes it is easier to see how changes can benefit consumers but in the end all changes are made for the interest of the business.
