Foxconn does damage control over Wisconsin factory

In this article, it talks about how Foxconn is shifting strategy and will offer mostly researcher and engineering jobs in Wisconsin. They are no longer going to be offering the blue-collar manufacturing jobs that were originally promised when they first announced the factory. The plant is expected to cost around ten billion dollars and according to the article, Foxconn is expected to continue construction after they recently just talked to the White House about it.

Foxconn received $4 billion in tax breaks from the state of Wisconsin to build LCD TV screens at the plant, but plans have recently shifted. They stated that they have no place in the United States in terms of making LCD TV screen because they simply cannot compete. The site is now expected to be an advanced manufacturing facility and a place for technological innovation.

The main reason that Foxconn gave for this change in strategy for the Wisconsin factory was that the global market environment has changed since they first announced the project. They have realized that they cannot make a profit by making LCD TV screens because of the competition that exists. However, Foxconn is still planning on employing around 13,000 U.S. at the new facility.

The main takeaway that I got from this article is that as a business you need to be able to adapt to changes in the global economy. Foxconn quickly realized that they would be better if they made the decision to not produce the LCD TV screen at the new factory. They thought it would be able to make more money if it was going to be an advanced manufacturing facility. By changing their strategy Foxconn now will be better positioned from long-term success in the state of Wisconsin.

Zuckerberg Plans to Integrate WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook Messenger

In this article by the New York Times, it discusses how Mark Zuckerberg plans to basically make WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook Messenger more compatible with each other. Mark Zuckerberg, who is the CEO of Facebook has ordered all of the apps to incorporate end-to-end encryption. His plan is to create all of Facebook’s messaging platform into one huge interconnected communicationplatform.

Currently, you are not able to send messages from Facebook to someone who only has the WhatsApp platform. With this change users on Facebook Messenger, Instagram, and WhatsApp would all be able to communicate, regardless of the app that they are using. However, all three of the services still are going to operate as stand-alone apps.

According to the article, the people involved in the project say that it is going to require thousands of Facebook employees working together in order to complete this move. They are going to have to reconfigure how WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook Messenger function at their most basic levels. Furthermore, Facebook is still in the early stages of the work and plans to complete it by the end of the year or in early 2020.

I believe that this is a really great move by Facebook because it will allow for more people to be able to connect to each other. Also, when this project is completed it will increase the companies profits because of the increased user engagement. The major takeaway that I have from this article is that company’s need to be willing to change over time. It is extremely important for a company to change and adapt over time in order to remain relevant and be as profitable as possible.

Tesla will need to make cheaper Model 3s by the second half of 2019

In this article by CNBC, it talks about how Tesla needs to make cheaper Model 3s in order to make them more affordable for everyday people. Tesla announced that they currently have plans to cut around 7 percent of its workforce in efforts to reduce costs. This amounts to around 3,100 workers throughout the company. CEO Elon Musk stated that one of the primary reasons for the job cuts was that Tesla cars are still too expensive for most people.

According to the article the sales boost from the $7,500 U.S. federal tax credit is running out, and that stands to hurt demand in the United States. Tesla’s current goal is to cut costs in an attempt to get closer to the $35,000 dollar price target for the Model 3 that they originally promised in 2016. This would help improve sales and make Tesla cars more affordable to more people.

It is very interesting to consider that currently the cheapest Model 3 available is the midrange rear-wheel-drive model, which starts around $44,000. This means that Telsa would have to decrease the price of even the base model by $9,000 or around 20 % just to get the cost to its original price target goal of $35,000. This seems like it is going to be a very long process and that cutting jobs is just a starting point for them.

One main takeaway that I have from this article is that the price of your product is extremely important. It does not matter how revolutionary your product is if not very many people can actually afford to purchase it. If Tesla is able to bring the price of the Model 3 down to around $35,000 I believe that you would see an increase in demand and popularity of Tesla products. Furthermore, I believe that electric vehicles are the way of the future and that price and reliability are truly the only obstacles that are in the way.

Retailers are slashing iPhone prices across China as consumers say the phones aren’t worth the cost

In this article by CNBC, it explains how in China the latest iPhone models are having a very difficult time selling. For this reason, Apple is having to heavily discount them. The article goes on to explain how experts say that poor iPhone sales throughout China are due to a combination of things. This includes a poor pricing strategy and a lack of exciting new features with recent models.

This will have a fairly large impact on Apple’s ability to make money in the Chinese market. Even Apple itself acknowledged earlier this month that lower than expected sales in China would more than likely cause worse-than-anticipated first-quarter revenue for 2019.

Many people including myself are wondering if the trade war has anything to do with this. However, Daniel Ives, managing director of equity research at Wedbush Securities gave his opinion on this. He said that the trade war is background noise and more of an excuse with the real issues being iPhone XR demand and being mispriced in the Chinese market.

I think that Apple is doing in the correct thing in this situation by decreasing iPhone prices to try and drive up sales in the Chinese market. I believe that the extremely high prices of iPhone discourages many people from being able to purchase them. Also, that this lower price will now allow far more people in China to be able to afford them. One piece of advice that I can offer is that it is extremely important to understand just how much demand there is for your products and to base your pricing strategy on this.
